Since its first edition, this guide has been conceived as a tool to support Pro Helvetia South America's residency programme, responding to a clear need: bringing visibility to the artistic residency ecosystem and strengthening the collaborations that make these processes possible. At the same time, it is an effort to broaden our understanding about the practices emerging from this territory and the ways in which they interact with other contexts.

In a region marked by scarce or non-existent funding for the arts, residencies have an essential role as spaces for research, creation and encounter, enabling artists to work on their processes. By connecting urban centres and rural areas, through fixed or flexible platforms, these experiences anchor themselves locally while opening up opportunities for decentralisation, thus reflecting current artistic practices.

The fourth edition of this guide, available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, seeks to broaden the conversation around these processes. It is organised in two complementary formats: an online database, gathering practical information and descriptions of 47 programmes and artistic residency spaces; and a publication, presenting interviews with artists who completed residencies in the region, where they share some of the processes, lessons, and challenges of their experiences.

Thank you for reading.
